The Abbasian Historical House in Kashan is a stunning example of traditional Iranian residential architecture from the Qajar era. Built in the 19th century in the Sultan Amir Ahmad district, the house spans over 7,000 square meters and features five separate courtyards across five floors. Its construction took nearly 20 years, and after the original owner's death, the property was divided among heirs until it was later purchased and unified by a man named Abbasian—hence the name. It also hosts a section dedicated to the Sohrab Sepehri Foundation, preserving the legacy of the renowned Iranian poet.

Architecturally, the Abbasian House is a masterpiece of Persian design, blending simplicity with intricate artistry. From the outside, it appears modest, but once inside, visitors are greeted with elaborate plasterwork, mirror mosaics, stained glass windows, and finely carved wooden doors. One of the most remarkable spaces is the "mirror room," where the ceiling reflects the desert sky with representations of the sun, moon, and stars. History of the Abbasian Historical House

Architecture of the Abbasian Historical House

In the Abbasian Historical House, you will see unique stucco moldings and paintings that include Islamic architectural features such as qatarbandi, yazdibandi, rasmibandi, and knotting. Religious matters were observed in the construction of this house and it was divided into two parts, inner and outer, even the design of the rooms is nested. Two different handles are also placed on the entrance door so that people can know whether a person is male or female by the different sounds of the knocks. The Abbasian Historical House has been nominated for the award for the most beautiful Iranian-Islamic residential building. One of the most important architectural principles used in the Abbasian Historical House is the use of the garden pit style; so that in this style, the building is built lower than the level of the alley, so-called pit, to make access to the water of the aqueduct easier. Another thing is that symmetry has been observed in the construction of this house, the parts of the Abbasian Historical House are also completely symmetrical and include winter and summer parts that were lived in according to the weather in the relevant part.

Different parts of the Abbasian Historical House

The Abbasian Historical House has a 3-story historical building with 5 inner courtyards, a garden, a staff section, a pond and other parts. Of course, after the death of the original owner of this house, the courtyards were converted into separate houses. The outer part also includes the mirror room, a covered hall, three-door and five-door rooms, a porch and ... The most beautiful part in this house is the mirror room, which is considered one of the most magnificent parts and has the most beautiful decorations and stained glass that you will not get tired of watching, because this room has a special atmosphere with stucco, mirror work, colorful doors and windows.
The ceiling of this room has mirrors in the shape of the moon, stars and sun. When the lamp is turned on and the light reflects on the silk threads suspended from the ceiling, a beautiful image of the desert sky is recreated. You only have to touch these scenes up close, the feeling of this room cannot be described from a distance.
The luxurious mirror room includes sash doors with plaster lattice windows visible in these doors. This room is so beautiful that their wedding ceremonies were also held there. There was also a part for the main residents of the house and it was completely separate from the other parts and no one was allowed to enter except themselves. There is also a royal room on the upper floor of the interior.
On the lower floors of the interior, you can also see the toilet, water well, and the pond section. In part of this building, there is also a two-story building that was used during ceremonies and there is no decoration in this part. In fact, it can be said that the architecture used in the construction of the Abbasid historical house is introverted and Islamic; veiled architecture, meaning the presence of a wall around the roof space, was used to prevent neighbors from seeing it.

Restoration and Reconstruction of the Abbasid Historical House

In 1995, the Board of Trustees for the Restoration of the Historical Texture of Kashan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Industries and Mines, purchased and restored the Abbasid historical house, and in 1998, it was registered on the list of national monuments of the country.
