Chogha Zanbil Ziggurat

Elamite Origins:

Chogha Zanbil, also known as Dur Untash, was a project of the Elamite king Untash-Napirisha. It was likely intended as a religious capital, a federal sanctuary for Elamite deities, particularly Inshushinak.

The Ziggurat:

The complex's most prominent feature is the ziggurat, the largest of its kind in Iran and one of the few remaining outside Mesopotamia. Unlike other ziggurats, its levels were built independently, with each floor having its own foundation on the ground.

Religious Significance:

The ziggurat was topped with a temple dedicated to Inshushinak, the God associated with the city of Susa. It was believed that the God ascended to heaven from this location and returned.

Architectural Uniqueness:

The complex included three concentric enclosure walls, with a royal quarter and residential areas alongside the ziggurat. The ziggurat itself had 7 portals and 7 sacrificial places on its southeastern side.

Decline and Rediscovery:

While construction was ongoing, the complex was never fully completed. It was eventually sacked by the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal, but contrary to historical claims, the site was not completely destroyed. Chogha Zanbil was later forgotten until its rediscovery in the 20th century.
