Passenger Trains and Railway Routes in Iran
Intercity passenger trains in Iran connect Tehran with major cities. Currently, the following routes are available:
- Tehran - Shiraz
- Tehran - Yazd
- Tehran - Bandar Abbas
- Tehran - Mashhad
- Tehran - Rasht
- Tehran - Tabriz
- Tehran - Ardabil
- Tehran - Hamadan
Iran's railway network spans 8,300 km. Almost all tourist destinations can be reached by train from Tehran. Additionally, there is passenger rail service connecting Iran with Turkey.
There are two types of trains in Iran. The first type features 4- or 6-berth compartments with sleeping arrangements. The second type is a bus-train, which offers only seating. Iranian trains are categorized by comfort levels, with the five-star train being the most comfortable. It includes comfortable seats, pull-out tables, a television, and a selection of snacks and meals served onboard. The third and fourth class trains have less comfortable seats and tables, while second class trains are minimally equipped.
Trains from Tehran to Isfahan operate every other day, primarily featuring 3-star class trains with compartments accommodating 4–6 passengers. Travel time is approximately 8 hours.
Daily trains run from the Iranian capital to Yazd, mostly in 3-4 star classes, offering both seating options and compartments for 4–6 passengers. Travel time ranges from 6 to 8 hours.
To Shiraz, a daily train with 3-4 star class 4-berth compartments is available. Travel time is over 15 hours.
The Tehran to Bandar Abbas route is served by daily trains, mainly in 3-4 star classes with compartments for 4–6 passengers. Travel time is 21 hours.
Trains to southwestern cities such as Shushtar and Hamedan operate every other day, while a daily 3-star train with 4-berth compartments runs to the city of Susa.
To the southeastern city of Kerman, a train departs daily from Tehran.
Trains to Rasht also operate daily, offering both seating options and 4-berth compartments. Travel time is 5 hours and 40 minutes.
Comfortable 5-star trains are available to cities such as Karaj, Qazvin, and Zanjan. To the eastern city of Tabriz, 2-3 star trains depart daily from the Iranian capital, with a travel time of 12 hours and 50 minutes.
