Gilan Rural Heritage Museum: A Forest of Memory, Craft, and Culture

A Living Chronicle of Gilan’s Past

Nestled in the heart of Saravan Forest Park, the Gilan Rural Heritage Museum is Iran’s first eco-museum, born from a vision to preserve the region’s rich cultural legacy. The idea took root after the devastating 1990 Rudbar earthquake, which destroyed countless traditional homes. Spearheaded by Dr. Mahmoud Taleghani, the museum was established to safeguard Gilan’s rural architecture and lifestyle. Since its inauguration in 2006, it has grown into a vibrant cultural hub that offers visitors an immersive journey into the past.

Authentic Architecture and Relocated Homes

Unlike conventional museums, Gilan’s eco-museum features 28 original rural houses that were carefully dismantled from various villages and reconstructed on-site. These homes, some over 150 years old, showcase traditional building techniques using wood, straw, and cob. Visitors can wander through rice barns, silkworm breeding rooms, stables, and bread ovens — each structure a testament to the ingenuity and lifestyle of Gilan’s rural communities.

Cultural Treasures and Daily Life

Beyond architecture, the museum brings Gilan’s intangible heritage to life. Exhibits include tools for farming, cooking, and textile production, as well as traditional clothing and household items. Visitors can witness live demonstrations of handicrafts like Rashti embroidery and pottery, and even dress in local attire for photos. Seasonal festivals and cultural performances add a dynamic layer to the experience, making it a living museum that celebrates both history and tradition.
