Khalat Pooshan Tower - Tabriz’s Regal Rituals Cast in Stone
History of Khulat-Poshan Tower
The Khulat-Poshan Tower, also known as the Tower of the Robes, is a historical monument dating back to the late Safavid era in Tabriz, Iran. Originally constructed as a ceremonial site, it gained prominence during the early Qajar period when it became the designated location for royal robe presentations. Qajar crown princes would bestow robes, insignia, and honors upon government officials here, marking it as a symbol of prestige and political ritual.
The final recorded ceremony at the tower took place in 1330 AH under the reign of Samad Khan Maraghe. Over time, the tower transitioned from a royal ceremonial site to a research facility, now managed by the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Tabriz. Despite its changing roles, the tower remains a testament to Iran’s dynastic traditions and the cultural significance of Tabriz as a political center.
Architecture of Khulat-Poshan Tower
Architecturally, the tower is a three-story structure built on a hexagonal base with a diameter of 9.5 meters. The first floor features a domed roof, while the second floor’s original roof collapsed and was replaced with iron beams. The third floor is open to the sky, giving the tower a layered and evolving appearance that reflects its historical wear and restoration efforts.
Set in a lush valley along the Tabriz-Basmanj road, the tower’s location enhances its visual appeal. Its strategic placement near the Mehraneh-Rud River and the Meydan Chay river adds to its serene ambiance. The surrounding greenery and proximity to water sources not only made it a fitting site for royal ceremonies but also contribute to its architectural harmony with nature.
