Historical Village of Kharanaq
The village of Kharanaq has been inhabited for over 1,000 years, spanning various historical periods. Remarkably preserved in its original form, it now stands as a striking example of how humans have adapted to their natural environment over the centuries. Today, the village is nearly deserted. Following government incentives that encouraged local residents to move to a newer, more developed area to the west, most of the villagers have left their homes.
Architecture of the Village of Kharanaq
Kharanaq is situated approximately 79 km northeast of Yazd, in a mountainous region on the edge of a desert characterised by a hot and arid climate. Historical records and archaeological excavations indicate that the village dates back to the pre-Islamic period and was originally settled by Zoroastrians, as evidenced by the fire temple located near the village.
The houses in Kharanaq have been expertly adapted to the harsh desert climate and the threat of enemy attacks. Constructed primarily from raw adobe bricks, a readily available material, these buildings served as effective thermal insulators. The adobe was moisture-resistant, helping to keep the interiors cool during hot summer days and warm on chilly nights. The village also features a network of underground tunnels, which provided a means of refuge in times of danger.
Sights of Kharanaq
Today, the main attractions of Kharanaq include the Qajar mosque, the impressive 17th-century cylindrical minaret, and the caravanserai at the village entrance. While these structures have been restored, many of the surrounding buildings are in a deteriorated state. Therefore, it is advisable to visit the site with a guide who can ensure a safe route to the key landmarks.
From the very heart of the old quarter, there is a stunning view of the valley at the foot of the mountains, which looks particularly serene at sunset. As the last rays of the sun fade, the ancient adobe structures blend into the twilight, creating a harmonious and tranquil scene.
