Historical House of Dr. Manafzadeh - An Architecturally Significant Building in Ardabil
The Manafzadeh House is a historical gem dating back to the First Pahlavi era. Built in 1930 by the renowned architect Haj Mohammad Ali Memari at the request of Hossein Qoli Sadeghi — a prominent figure of the time — the house has witnessed nearly a century of transformation. Originally a private residence, it later served as a branch of Bank Melli, the Savak administration, and eventually became a cultural hub under the Ardabil Art Department. In 2003, it was officially registered as a national heritage site, preserving its legacy for future generations.
Architectural Brilliance: Exterior and Interior Highlights
The Manafzadeh House spans over 1,300 square meters and showcases a rectangular plan with a unique elevation difference — appearing as a single-story structure from the south and a two-story building from the north, connected by nine steps. Its facade is adorned with intricate brickwork, geometric patterns, and traditional wall cladding. The blue doors and windows add a vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of the brick. Inside, the house features modest yet elegant design elements that reflect the humility and cultural values of its original inhabitants. The short doorways, for instance, symbolize respect and humility.
A Courtyard Oasis: Nature Meets Heritage
One of the most enchanting aspects of the Manafzadeh House is its spacious courtyard. Once filled with colorful tulips and lush greenery, the yard still retains its charm despite some wear over the years. At the center stands a two-story koushk (pavilion), offering a serene spot to admire the surroundings. The blend of architectural finesse and natural beauty makes the courtyard a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking a moment of tranquility amid the city bustle.
Thanks to its central location in Sarcheshme Square, the Manafzadeh House is surrounded by several must-see attractions. Just a short walk or drive away, you can visit the majestic Sheikh Safi al-Din Shrine (2.7 km). Nature lovers will enjoy a trip to Lake Shorabil (4.5 km). Ardabil’s rich tapestry of culture and nature makes it a perfect destination for every traveler.
