Tomb of Saadi: A Sanctuary of Wisdom in Shiraz

In the tranquil northeast corner of Shiraz, nestled among cypress trees and flowing fountains, lies the Tomb of Saadi — a serene tribute to one of Persia's greatest literary minds. Known as Saadieh, this mausoleum honors Saadi Shirazi, the 13th-century poet whose verses on ethics, love, and humanity continue to echo across centuries and cultures.

About Saadi Shirazi

Born around 1210 CE, Saadi was a master of Persian prose and poetry, famed for his works Bustan (The Orchard) and Golestan (The Rose Garden). His writings, shaped by decades of travel through the Islamic world, reflect universal themes of justice, humility, and compassion. A line from Golestan — “The children of Adam are limbs of one another” — is inscribed at the United Nations, symbolizing his global legacy.

Architectural Elegance

The current tomb, designed by Mohsen Foroughi in 1952, blends traditional Persian architecture with modern simplicity:

  • Octagonal interior with marble walls and an azure dome
  • Eight granite columns framing the entrance
  • Travertine façade and turquoise-tiled arch above the tomb
  • Poetic inscriptions from Saadi's works etched into the walls
  • Coin pond and fish pool, fed by the Saadieh Qanat, where visitors toss coins and make wishes
  • The structure evokes the layout of Chehel Sotoun Palace, symbolizing harmony between poetry and space.
