- Why Visit Sa’at Square
In the heart of Tabriz, where the pulse of the city meets its historical soul, stands Sa’at Square — a civic landmark crowned by the iconic Municipality Palace, also known as the Sa’at Tower. More than just a public space, this square is a living chronicle of Iran’s modern urban evolution.
A Tower That Tells Time and Tales
Built in 1934 by architect Avedis Ohanjanian, the Sa’at Tower was originally designed as the central municipal office of Tabriz. Its 30.5-meter-high clock tower, with four faces and rhythmic hourly chimes, quickly became a symbol of civic pride and modernity.
- The building’s eagle-shaped layout, visible from above, reflects German architectural influences of the pre-WWII era.
- The stone façade, arched iwans, and symmetrical design evoke both European precision and Persian grandeur.
A Square with Shifting Statues and Stories
Until 1945, the site was merely a crossroads. It was transformed into a square under Ja'far Pishevari’s rule, with a bust of Baqer Khan, the National Commander, installed at its center. After Pishevari’s fall, the statue was replaced by one of Mohammad Reza Shah, marking the square as a canvas for political change.
Today, Sa’at Square is:
- A national heritage site
- A venue for public ceremonies, including Earth Hour, when the tower’s lights are turned off in symbolic unity
- A gathering place for New Year celebrations, where a grand Haft-sin is displayed behind the tower
Inside the Municipality Museum
Parts of the tower now house the Municipality Museum, featuring:
- Historical maps and photographs of Tabriz
- Artifacts like the Golden Key of Tabriz
- A rug collection displayed in the main hall
- Remnants of the original bell, damaged during the Russian invasion in WWII
Why Visit Sa’at Square
Whether you're tracing the footsteps of revolutionaries or admiring the rhythmic elegance of a mechanical clock, Sa’at Square offers:
- A fusion of architecture and ideology
- A central node in Tabriz’s urban identity
