In a quiet corner of Isfahan, nestled within the serene Bagh Takieh garden on Saeb Street, lies the final resting place of one of Iran's most prolific poets—Saeb Tabrizi. His tomb is not just a memorial; it's a living tribute to the lyrical soul of the Safavid era, where poetry, architecture, and nature converge in harmony.

About Saeb Tabrizi

Born in Tabriz in the early 17th century, Mirza Mohammad Ali, known as Saeb Tabrizi, was a master of the Indian Style (Sabk-e Hendi) of Persian poetry. His verses—rich in metaphor, imagery, and philosophical depth—earned him the title of Poet Laureate under Shah Abbas II. Though he spent time in India, Kabul, and Herat, he returned to Isfahan, where he lived out his final years and was buried in his private garden.

Architectural Elegance

The tomb, completed in 1967 during the Pahlavi era, reflects a blend of Safavid architecture and modern restoration:

  • A high porch with ten stone steps and lancet arches
  • Mirrorwork ceiling that glimmers with light and symbolism
  • Yazdi marble gravestone, inset with Saeb's original tombstone bearing verses in calligraphy by Mohammad Saleh, a Safavid-era scribe
  • Poetry-inscribed walls, where Saeb's single-bit verses come alive in visual form
  • A pond and waterfall, reminiscent of Chehel Sotoun Palace, adding tranquility to the space
