The Tower of the Se Gonbad Tomb, located in the romantic city of Urmia in Iran, is a true treasure that takes us deep into the past. This architectural gem, built in the 13th century, is not only a magnificent example of Iranian architecture but also a history full of mysteries and secrets.

Se Gonbad, which means "Three Domes," encapsulates the power and spirit of a time when art and science, philosophy and religion intertwined as one. This mausoleum was built in honour of the distinguished scholar and poet Amin al-Din Sayid. Legends tell that he possessed an extraordinary gift of prophecy and could foresee the future, which made his works highly revered among his contemporaries.

The Architecture of the Se-Gonbad Tower in Urmia

The tower, built on a high cylindrical platform, stands at a height of 13 metres and has a diameter of 5 metres. The main and outer plan of the tower is circular, with its front section framed in a rectangular shape, adorned with patterns on the cylindrical body of the tower. The lower part of the structure is made of grey stones, extending to a height of over six metres. The materials used in the upper part of the building are also made of rectangular bricks.

The decorations at the entrance to the tomb are unique in their own way, crafted using materials such as stone and plaster. These elements consist of geometric patterns and inscriptions in Kufic script, as well as vents for light and airflow, which are installed on all four sides of the tower. The Se Gonbad Tower comprises two floors, with the first floor serving as a catacomb, separated from the second floor by an arched ceiling. The second floor houses the tomb room, with its entrance located 2.5 metres above ground through a door. The internal shape of the tower and the tomb room is square. The muqarnas and beautiful arches used in this room are among the decorative features found in the building.
