Contemporary Art Museum of Tehran: Where Modernism Meets Persian Soul
An introduction to what the museum holds
Tucked beside Laleh Park in central Tehran, the Contemporary Art Museum of Tehran (TMoCA) is a striking fusion of modernist architecture and traditional Persian design. Opened in 1977 under the patronage of Empress Farah Pahlavi, the museum was envisioned as a cultural bridge between Iran and the global art world. Designed by architect Kamran Diba, its spiraling galleries and earth-toned brickwork echo the windcatchers and courtyards of Iran’s desert cities, while housing one of the most valuable collections of Western modern art outside Europe and North America.
What is there to visit?
Inside, visitors encounter a remarkable blend of Iranian and international masterpieces — from works by Picasso, Warhol, and Giacometti to celebrated Iranian artists like Parviz Tanavoli and Sohrab Sepehri. With over 3,000 pieces in its collection, the museum offers a journey through 19th - and 20th - century art movements, all within a space that itself is a work of art. Beyond its galleries, the museum’s sculpture garden and rotating exhibitions continue to make it a dynamic hub for creativity, dialogue, and cultural exchange in the heart of Iran’s capital.
