History of Nane Maryam Church

Although Nane Maryam Church is relatively small in size, it is considered the second oldest church in the world after the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem due to its historical significance. Assyrian and Christian writers believe that this church was originally a fire temple during the Assyrian era and was converted into a church after Zoroastrians adopted Christianity. According to legend, three Zoroastrian priests saw a star at the time of Christ's birth and traveled to Jerusalem; upon returning, the fire temple was turned into a church.

The first renovation of the building took place in 624 AD by the order of a Chinese prince. Significant architectural changes were made in the late 19th century, and the most recent restorations occurred in 1963 and 1964.

Architecture of Nane Maryam Church

The architecture of Nane Maryam Church follows the Sassanid style and, like the fire temples of that time, showcases symmetrical design elements. The church’s interior architecture is a blend of Sassanid and Parthian styles, setting it apart from many churches worldwide with its simple design and lack of lavish decorations. The Assyrians, due to their belief in avoiding excessive ornamentation in their churches, built and preserved this religious site in that minimalist fashion.

Sections of Nane Maryam Church

Church Entrance

The church entrance has two sections, left and right, which were traditionally used as burial grounds for Christian clergy. Inscriptions are engraved on the gravestones. Most of these graves belong to missionaries of the Russian Orthodox Church and three of the country's leaders who are buried in this section.

The nested walls of the church are built with stone and mortar. Its low ceiling and entrance door require visitors to lower their heads as they enter. The church’s simple yet spiritual altar offers a breathtaking charm, and the minimalism of the structure can draw the viewer into a deep reflection on spirituality and human history.

Church Worship Area

The church contains no benches or chairs for sitting and worship. Additionally, there are no images of Christian saints on the walls, which is a unique aspect of its design. The church floor is covered with handwoven Iranian carpets, and a few chairs have been placed at the end of the hall for worshippers to sit.

Church Altar

Upon entering the altar area, there is a narrow and short hallway on the right side. A bit further along the right wall is a built-in wall oven that was traditionally used for baking sacred bread. Near this oven, a small stone basin is embedded in the wall, which was used for baptizing children.
