Urmia Sardar Mosque: A Timeless Beacon of Qajar Craftsmanship

Nestled along Imam Street in the heart of Urmia, the Sardar Mosque — also known as the Sa’atloo Mosque — stands as a proud relic of Iran’s Qajar-era architecture. Built in the early 19th century by Abdol Samad Khan, the forefather of Azim al-Saltaneh Sardar, this mosque is more than a place of worship — it’s a symbol of artistry, history, and civic pride.

The Clock That Named a Mosque

In 1951, a large clock was installed above the mosque’s entrance, earning it the nickname Sa’atloo — from the Persian word sa’at, meaning “clock.” This addition not only modernized the mosque’s façade but also turned it into a local landmark, where time and tradition meet.

Architectural Highlights

The mosque is built entirely of brick and mortar, with a layout that includes:

  • A grand shabestan (prayer hall) measuring 22 by 18 meters, supported by twelve octagonal stone columns adorned with intricate carvings
  • Green-tiled walls bordered by rainbow-hued floral motifs in pink, blue, white, yellow, and green
  • A small mihrab on the southern wall, decorated with colorful tilework and inscribed with Ayat al-Kursi, adding spiritual depth to its visual beauty
  • A smaller hall connected to the main shabestan, offering a quieter space for reflection
