Rasht Museum - Gilan’s Constitutional-Era Mansion of Memory
Housed in a charming early 20th-century mansion once owned by Mirza Hossein Khan Kasmai, a notable figure in Iran’s Constitutional Revolution, the Rasht Museum of Archaeology is a cultural gem in the heart of Gilan Province. Officially opened in 1989, the museum spans two floors and includes three sections: archaeology, anthropology, and historical documents. The archaeology section, located in the basement, showcases artifacts from prehistoric to Islamic periods, including 3,000-year-old terracotta drinking horns, bronze weapons, Sassanid perfume holders, and Achaemenid clay tablets. These items were excavated from ancient sites across Gilan, such as Marlik, Daylaman, and Cheraq Ali, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s deep and diverse history.
Upstairs, the anthropology section brings Gilan’s rural culture to life with displays of traditional clothing, musical instruments, handicrafts, and tools used in everyday life — from tea drying machines to leatherwork and pottery equipment. The museum also preserves Qajar-era contracts and deeds, adding a documentary layer to its historical narrative. Though modest in size, the Rasht Museum of Archaeology is rich in content and atmosphere, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the archaeological and cultural heritage of northern Iran.
