History of the Borujerdi Historical House

The Borujerdi House has a fascinating history. In the late 13th century AH, Seyyed Hassan Natanzi fell in love with Seyyed Jafar Tabatabaei's daughter and proposed marriage. Seyyed Jafar, a prominent carpet merchant who lived in a beautiful house known as the Tabatabaei House, set a unique condition for his consent: he asked Seyyed Hassan to build a house worthy of his daughter and similar to his own. Seyyed Hassan accepted this condition, with architect Ustad Ali Maryam Kashani overseeing the project. The construction of the inner courtyard took seven years, while the main hall was completed in eleven years. It’s worth noting that Seyyed Hassan is originally from Kashan and acquired the name Borujerdi due to his frequent business trips to the city of Borujerd.

The house exemplifies the splendor and beauty of traditional Iranian architecture. Covering an area of 1,700 square meters, it features various sections. Ustad Ali Maryam Kashani designed this building with consideration for Kashan’s warm climate and religious factors. It is said that over 150 masons, plasterers, mirror makers, and painters contributed to its construction. The intricate plasterwork and beautiful moqarnas (ornamental vaulting) are particularly striking. The interior paintings were created under the supervision of two prominent artists, Mirza Abolhassan Ghaffari Kashan and Mirza Mohammad Khan Ghaffari Kashani. Different Parts of the Borujerdi Historical House

The Borujerdi House consists of two parts—outer and inner—featuring three entrances. The main entrance is located on the north side, a southern entrance is designated for special guests, and a western entrance is used for religious ceremonies. The outer part includes a courtyard, a three-story basement, and entrance corridors. Between the inner and outer sections is the main entrance and a vestibule. The inner part features a large courtyard with a beautiful pond. The winter section of the house, located to the north of the courtyard, includes a room, a king's seat, a kitchen, a chest of drawers, and a storeroom, while the summer section to the south is more ornate. This section is notably cool, thanks to two windbreaks on the roof, and contains a main domed hall, 12 rooms, two courtyards, and a royal throne. The exquisite paintings and stucco carvings were executed under the supervision of Sani-ol-Molk, a distinguished Iranian painter and the uncle of Kamal-ol-Molk. The owner of the house, Seyyed Hassan Natanzi, was a merchant from Kashan, while the architect was Master Ali Maryam Kashani. He earned the name Borujerdi because of his frequent travels to the city of Borujerd. After falling in love with Seyyed Jafar Tabatabaei Natanzi's daughter, he agreed to build a house like his in exchange for her hand in marriage. After seven years of construction, he moved into the house when the inner courtyard was completed, and after eleven years, the main hall was finished. Today, the Borujerdi House serves as the Kashan Cultural Heritage Office.
