Khajou Bridge Isfahan (Pol-e Khaju):Persian gem on the Zayandeh river
The Khaju Bridge is an architectural masterpiece from the Safavid period of the 17th century. Commissioned by Shah Abbas II, it was constructed from stone and brick above the remains of an earlier bridge. It connects two districts: Khaju and Zoroastrian. The bridge is 132 metres in length and 12 metres in width, with arcades on both sides that regulate the flow of water. It features two levels.
The structure of the Khaju Bridge
On the upper level of the Khaju Bridge lies the main central passage, which was historically used by horses and carts. The arched pathways on either side were designated for pedestrians. In the centre of the structure, octagonal pavilions on both the lower and upper levels offered stunning views of the river and were intended for the leisure of rulers and the royal family.
Steps led from the lower part of the bridge to a shaded, cool area by the water, where people gathered to wash clothes and relax.
The lower level of the Khaju Bridge also functioned as a dam. During the spring and summer months, the water utilities of the bridge were closed, reserving water on the western side. This water was then redirected to a reservoir and distributed across the city for gardening and agricultural purposes.
Niches are positioned along both sides of the upper deck walkways, providing visitors with comfortable seating and beautiful views of the surrounding greenery and water. The exterior of the bridge is adorned with Persian ornaments and mosaics, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship.
Isfahan’s landmark
The Khaju Bridge is not only one of Isfahan's most captivating attractions but also a popular recreational spot for local residents. It is a cherished gathering place where people enjoy cooking kebabs, drinking tea, singing songs, and playing various instruments. Strolling along the river, one often encounters street musicians performing traditional Persian music, adding to the bridge's lively and cultural atmosphere.
How to get to the Si-o-se-pol Bridge
The Khaju Bridge is situated just 2 kilometres from the equally scenic Si-o-se-pol Bridge.
